Opioids in Coweta: What Every Parent Needs to Know

Prescription painkillers—like OxyContin®, Vicodin®, and Percocet®—are often prescribed for injuries or surgeries, but they come with serious addiction risks. Even when used correctly, opioids can be dangerous—especially for teens.

💬 Coweta County isn’t immune to the opioid crisis. Protecting our families starts with awareness and action.

🚨 What is Prescription Painkiller Abuse?

Taking opioids in any unsafe way increases the risk of addiction and overdose:
⚠️ Taking more than prescribed or using them in risky ways (crushing, snorting, injecting).
⚠️ Using someone else’s prescription—even for real pain.
⚠️ Taking opioids just to feel good or get high.

Repeated misuse can lead to addiction, overdose, and even death.

Who is at Risk? (It’s Closer Than You Think)

🔹 Teens & Young Adults – Many first try opioids from a family medicine cabinet.
🔹 Athletes – Sports injuries often lead to prescription painkiller use.
🔹 Long-Term Pain Patients – Even when prescribed, dependence can happen quickly.
🔹 Anyone Mixing Opioids & Other Substances – Combining painkillers with alcohol or anti-anxiety meds (like Xanax®) is especially dangerous.

👀 Watch for Warning Signs – Mood swings, secretive behavior, missing pills, or changes in friends and activities.

The Hidden Dangers of Opioids

💀 Just ONE extra dose can cause a fatal overdose.
📈 In 2016, prescription opioids caused over 14,400 deaths—that’s 40 lives lost per day in the U.S.
⚠️ Mixing opioids with alcohol or other drugs increases overdose risk.

How to Keep Your Family Safe

✔️ Lock Up Medications – Keep opioids out of reach and never share prescriptions.
✔️ Dispose of Unused Pills – Drop them at a local drug take-back site in Coweta County.
